Elijah said . . .

How much longer will you waver, hobbling between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him! But if Baal is God, then follow him! (1Kings 18)

But the people were completely silent.

It was only a few hours later that the LORD completely consumed the water-soaked alter with fire. The people, the very ones that were silent, fell down on their faces and cried out, “The LORD – he is God! Yes, the LORD is God!”

Even after 10 years of following Jesus, the same question Elijah asked is asked of me.

How much longer . . . ?

If the LORD is God, follow him!

But if your ambition is God, then follow it!

But if a good job is God, then follow it!

But if you are God, then follow yourself!

But if seminary studies is God, then follow them!

But if email/text/internet stuff is God, then follow it!

But if your fears are God, then follow them!

But if your worries are God, then follow them!

The LORD – he is God! Yes, the LORD is God!

The Bird Whisperer

It’s no secret that the Memphis Zoo rocks. It’s also no secret that the Bush family loves the Memphis Zoo. Seriously. The animals all know us. They do their animal thing when they see us.

We decided to invest in a zoo membership (79$). It gets the whole family in the zoo for free for a year. The zoo is only about 15 minutes from seminary housing and makes for a great outing with the kiddos.

Here is Sophia taming a wild African winged animal. She’s known as “The Bird Whisperer” around the zoo.

Be Lifted High

A lot of people ask me the same question in one form or the other.

“What are you studying to be at seminary?” or “What are your plans after seminary?” or “What are you going to seminary for?”

It’s a fair question. I’ve probably asked it myself. But, the funny thing is I don’t really think of my time here in that way. I’m not here to go anywhere. I’m here because this is where Jesus put me. I’m not here to leave. I’m here to lift Him high.

Yes, we do have plans/leadings/guidance (and an anticipated graduation date). If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be getting a Masters of Missiology. However, being a missionary doesn’t start when (if) my feet hit some foreign soil. It’s now. After all, this is foreign soil. My mission is clear, and it starts now.

I’m studying to be a better cross-cultural worker. But, that’s secondary. I’m here to lift Him high in obedience and faith.

Speaking of haircuts. Samuel got his first just a few days ago.

By the way, I can hook you up, if you’d like a similar style!

Jerry’s Sno Cones

Memphis is replete with history, culture, and tradition. Places like Rendezvous, Graceland, and Beale St. get most of the attention, but that’s not the real Memphis. The real Memphis probably isn’t going to be listed in a brochure. The real Memphis is made up of places like Jerry’s Sno Cones.

It’s in a terrible location, almost impossible to find. It’s housed in a run-down building (though it does have a relatively recent paint job, pink!). Yet, people drive from all around Memphis to partake in Jerry’s Sno Cone goodness. I have to admit they really are amazing (How do they get the ice so fine?) Not to mention they are open all year.

We loaded up the kiddos and made our first visit to Jerry’s last week. The Melicks family, fellow MABTSers, introduced us to Jerry’s. Quite frankly, we hit it off real well. We’ll be back.

It wasn’t Sophia’s first snow cone, but probably the best she’s ever tasted. Pink Cotton Candy was her choice. It was delicious (How do I know? The ‘dad tax’ of course!).
jerrys snow cones
The best thing about Jerry’s? Not the snow cones (though they are scrumptious). Not the hamburgers (Yup. They sell hamburgers. And cheese fries, too.). The best thing is the chance to step out of routine and be with friends. Words can’t express how grateful we are for the community we have here at MABTS.

MABTS Founders’ Days Golf Fellowship

Last August I got the chance to help Brad Johnson document the Founders’ Days Golf Tournament. Here are a few shots from the day.

This year’s tournament will be held on Monday, August 17th at the Cordova Country Club. For more information on this year’s Founders’ Days activities, visit the website.

In the Library

If your looking for some excitement, do not go to the library . . . especially during the summer. However, if you are writing a paper (as I am) and need some peace and quiet (as I do), then there is no better place to be.

Just have a look. It’s a ghost town in here! But, great for being scholarly.

Mike and Carrie Collins and Randy and Tricia Williamson live in the same apartment building as my family. Mike and Randy are both pastors of small churches. Randy serves in Mississippi. Mike pastors in Arkansas. They have also figured out a great way to save some money!

Hispanic Bible Study

I told you about the exam I was giving the folks in the Hispanic Home Bible Study I lead every week. They got really excited about the whole affair. When I showed up, they were all jittery, frantically going over their study guides. They wanted to do well. And they did.

It wasn’t just test night. We made it a fiesta. We ate pizza. Amanda made a German Chocolate Cake. We watched some soccer. And, we sang songs.

Here are a few photos from the shindig.
